Arson and Destruction Grip Bangladesh’s Garment Sector

A wave of arson and destruction has swept through Bangladesh’s garment and industry sector, leaving a trail of devastation and uncertainty. Over the past year, more than 50 factories have been targeted, resulting in billions of taka in losses and thousands of workers left jobless.

The latest incidents have occurred in Dhaka’s Ashulia area, where several factories were set ablaze, causing extensive damage. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as workers fled the burning buildings. “I was inside the factory when I heard the fire alarm,” said one worker. “We barely made it out alive.”

Protests have erupted outside the factories, with workers demanding justice and better working conditions. Thousands have taken to the streets, blocking highways and disrupting daily life. The demonstrations have turned violent, with clashes between protesters and riot police.

The garment sector is a crucial component of Bangladesh’s economy, accounting for over 80% of the country’s exports. However, the industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including labour unrest, low wages, and poor working conditions. The recent arson attacks have only exacerbated these issues.

The government has deployed riot police to maintain order, but the situation remains volatile. “We are working to restore normalcy,” said a government spokesperson. “But it’s a complex situation.” The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has expressed concern, stating, “The industry is facing an unprecedented crisis.”

As tensions continue to simmer, the international community watches with concern. Global brands have expressed worries about the impact on supply chains. With the garment sector teetering on the brink, Bangladesh’s economic future hangs in the balance.
