The death of Hazrat Ali, a 30-year-old expatriate from Dubai, in military custody has sparked widespread outrage in the Bangsharampur area of Brahmanbaria. According to his family, Ali died as a result of brutal torture. The incident occurred early Friday morning (December 6).

Hazrat Ali, son of Mohammad Kuddus from the village of Bholanagar, was on vacation in Bangladesh from Dubai, where he worked.

The family alleges that after the political shift on August 5, multiple cases were filed against Mohammad Kuddus, an Awami League supporter, and his son, who had spent many years abroad. Fearing harassment due to these cases, Ali had stayed away from his family upon returning to Bangladesh. However, before returning to Dubai, he went to visit his family, where the alleged torture took place.

According to the family, three military vehicles surrounded the house on Thursday night. Unable to find Hazrat Ali, soldiers detained his brother-in-law, schoolteacher Al-Amin Master, tied him to a tree, and began beating him. Upon witnessing this, Hazrat Ali emerged from hiding, only to be bound to a tree and subjected to brutal torture. During the assault, he pleaded, “Don’t beat me, I will die. Please let me drink water.” Despite his cries, the torture continued.

After the assault, the soldiers reportedly took Hazrat Ali into a vehicle, and his family claims that he died shortly after arriving at the police station.

When the family was contacted about receiving the body, they expressed outrage, saying, “You took him alive, we want him back alive. Why should we take his dead body?”

The family alleges that when they refused to accept the body, it was forcibly sent to their home without an autopsy. This has sparked widespread anger in the area.

Al-Amin Master, the brother-in-law, said, “Even if my brother-in-law was guilty, no one has the right to beat him to death like this. This is not something that should happen in a civilized society. We demand a proper investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.”

As of now, no comments have been made by the military or the Bangsharampur police regarding the incident. However, the local community and the family are demanding justice.
