A group identifying themselves as Touhidi Janata has issued threats to stop the annual Lalon Fair and Sadhusang in Narayanganj, calling it “destructive to faith. The event, organized by Muktidham Ashram and Lalon Academy, honors the legacy of spiritual icon Lalon Shah and has been a yearly tradition.

Fakir Shah Jalal, founder of the ashram and academy, said the event includes performances of Lalon’s songs and communal meals. Although it has been held without issue in past years, this time, threats of violence and destruction have created fear among organizers.

Last Friday, a group of over 100 people marched under the “Touhidi Janata” banner in protest and held a rally at a local field. During the gathering, Hefazat-e-Islam leader Maulana Abdul Awal denounced the event, calling for it to be stopped and warning of potential force if it continued.

Videos circulated online show Awal urging followers to act against the fair. Shah Jalal said mosque announcements called for people to prepare for an attack on the ashram. Police intervened to prevent violence, arriving at the scene shortly after the threats were made.

Local police confirmed that steps were taken to ensure peace and advised organizers to secure proper permission. Shah Jalal said they have applied for permission but remain concerned about the possibility of attacks.

The Narayanganj Cultural Alliance condemned the threats, urging authorities to ensure the fair’s safety. Local officials, including the deputy commissioner, said they are monitoring the situation and will act if law and order are threatened.

The incident highlights growing tensions in Bangladesh over cultural events often targeted by conservative groups, raising broader questions about freedom of expression in the country.
